It all began here, at Trees Center, reputedly purchased from the U.S. Army after World War II for $1 a building (which is more than they were worth, even then). Ahaywehs lived in Upper Linden (that is to say, the second story of Linden Hall). The other buildings were likewise named for trees (Maple, Pine, Hickory, etc.) with a central building (Arbutus Hall) for dining, snackbar and "sock hops", one supposes. Our feminine counterparts were housed in Pine Hall, giving rise to the epithet "Pine Swine."
Ahaywehs were active in Trees and university affairs. Witness the Trees small group entry in the IU sing for 64/65, performing "The Idle Poor," including Fred Holmes (second from left), Walt Lamble (standing) and Mike Halbrook (right). Can anyone identify the others?

In the early 1960s, new dorms were popping up all over campus. By 1964, the university decided to close down Trees and move its residents to new quads. For the Ahaywehs, most were shipped to Foster Quad in January 1965, the rest to McNutt Quad. Needless to say, Trees did not shut down, but served a number of purposes for the next 20 years. It is now, truly, a memory, the site being filled by the massive, new education building.

McNutt Quadrangle (left) and Foster Quadrangle (right). Ahayweh refugees lived in the north wing of McNutt, facing Fee Lane, and in Shea Hall at Foster. But, by the fall of 1965, Briscoe was ready and we moved in. With more rooms on two floors, the men's program expanded its numbers.
This photo was taken in the spring of '65 when we were refugees.

The Residence Scholars moved into the south wing, floors 6 and 7, of the brand new Herman T. Briscoe Quadrangle. To this date, we are still asking "Who was this Herman guy?"

Here are our Quad officers that year; you will notice that we controlled three of the six posts (Miedema, Hart, Lamble).

The
"older" men of that time will remember the demise of Ye Olde Regulator
Taverne and its replacement by Ye Newe Olde Regulator" (which was much more
posh). Today it's a real estate office!
In 1966-67, we again were prominent in Quad affairs, electing one of our own as president.

In 1966-67, the Ahaywehs had a team in the Little 500. As we didn't win, there is no photo, alas! We made up in memory what we lacked in brawn, winning the campus Quiz Bowl. The winning team (L-R, Larry Clunie, Dick Day, Rich Jarrell and Mike Thomson).

In 1967-68, no one bothered to show up to get photographed. Student politicians, of course, always show up! Here are the Briscoe governors for 1967-68: notice our Rory O'Bryan (centre) as president; Rodger Smith (second from left) was treasurer and Jim May (next, right, from Rory) was a governor.
