Benny Joe (Ben) ALLEN is a dean at Iowa State University, Ames, IA.
I have been associated with universities ever since leaving Indiana University in 1969. After earning my Ph.D.in economics from the University of Illinois, I a spent five years as an assistant professor of economics at Washington State University from 1974 to 1979. From 1979 to the current time I have been at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa serving in a number of faculty positions over the years (I did leave a couple of times for other universities to serve as a visiting faculty member). Currently I am serving as interim provost after having served one year as interim vice president of external affairs, and after serving seven years as dean of the College of Business. I am trying to get back to the classroom and research but with little success. Like Rodger, retirement is not in my immediate future. Interestingly, I did get to know Sharon Brehm, the recently selected Chancellor of Indiana University at Bloomington, when I chaired the presidential search committee here at Iowa State last year. We have kept in touch since that time. I had two roommates--Jack Countryman during my freshman year and Rodger during my sophomore year. I could find no better person to room with and debate the issues of the day with than with Rodger. I take great pride in the fact that Rodger served as best man at my wedding and that I was asked by Rodger to serve as his best man at his wedding. I had a number of close friends during my two-year involvement with Wally Johnson becoming one of my best friends, and like Rodger, a life-long friend. I married Pat after my sophomore year and we celebrated our 35th anniversary. Our only child, Jessica, is 26 and both she and her husband are in graduate school (in engineering) at the University of Michigan. I was not the first in my immediate family to attend college but without this program, I would not have been able to attend. I look back fondly to the times I spent at Indiana U.

I have taught at Cascade H.S., a rural consolidation southwest of Indianapolis, since I graduated in 1968. I got an M.A.T. on campus and lived in a dorm (Eigenmann) two summers because I preferred the dorm to an apartment, but it wasn't the same as Linden and Briscoe. I have mostly taught History, Psychology, and Sociology. My wife of 18 years teaches Algebra across the hall. I started late on marriage and on having: our twins, Lisa and Teddy, are 10. I read a lot (nonfiction) and buy a lot of music (Dylan, John Prine, Dave Alvin, Waylon Jennings, Van Morrison, and others too numerous to mention). Cascade has a lot of kids like we were: first in the family to go to college with barely or not quite enough money to swing it. I consider it a great privilege to have had the chance to live with and grow up with the guys in this unit. I still admire the efforts of guys who "knew when to work and knew when to play" and who were willing to live in a slum or clean up dirty dishes or swab urinals in order to get a college education.

I was a teacher, a District level administrator, an assistant principal and a

Upon his passing, his wife, Sandra, wrote: "The Fraternity of the AHAYWEHS meant so much to Ron. He always looked forward to the gathering at Nick's and reminiscing about those undergraduate years. He was very proud of each of you and your professional achievements. Ron always felt that the success of the program that brought each of you to Indiana University was never fully recognized or acknowledged by IU. The high percent of AHAYWEH graduates is phenomenal and your choice of careers cover a wide spectrum including K-12 teachers, professors, researchers, Bell Labs, doctors, lawyers, librarians, mathematicians, writers, artists." .
Jerry Wayne FUNKHOUSER had further studies at Indiana State.
Retirement is a few years away! I have been married to an educator (Cheryl) for the past 32 years, and we have two children: Kristen (an occupational therapist in Illinois) and Kyle (a professional student in Indy majoring in education also). Neither of the kids wanted to follow in dad's footsteps and go to I.U. ...they opt for smaller environments Franklin College and Marian College to continue their education and to have a chance to continue playing tennis. No grandkids...just a granddog! I have been principal at Mt. Vernon Junior High (grades 6-8) for the past 20 years, and I have just begun serving as President of the Indiana Association of School Principals.

Richard Adrian JARRELL.
I graduated in 1967 and entered grad school in History & Philosophy of Science. Unfortunately, Vietnam caught up with me and I tried to get conscientious objector status; no go, so off to Canada in the spring of '68. I was the first student of the new Institute for History & Philosophy of Science & Technology at the University of Toronto (MA, '69, PhD, '72); began teaching at York University in 1970 and have been there ever since. Married Martha Mafit (music major) in 1968, after having met her on a blind date arranged by my old roommate Joe Gore's ex-girlfriend (I know this is complicated). We have two sons, both want to be rock musicians; so much for the intellectual genes. I am now working on a diploma at Guelph University in landscape design for my second career after 65 (hopefully in British Columbia). Mountains and environmental activism are our main passions.

A very quick run-down on a fulfilling, but less-than-exciting life. I graduated in 68 and immediately started teaching at Grenwood High School, just outside of indianapolis. I taught there for five years and worked concurrently on a masters from Butler. At the end of five years, i got a call from the head of the music department at the Universiy of Iowa, where I stayed for 3 years and ended up with a PhD. I taught at California State at Sacramento and hated both California and the school, so i got a job back in the midwest teaching and supervising in the Glenbrook High School system in Glenview/Northbrook, Illinois, and i retired from there last week. Hence, the move to Bloomington. I adopted a son in 1980, and he is now married and I have two grandchildren, aged 11 and 1. They live in my mom and dad's house in Evansville. All's right with the world.

A. David MEYER.
I was in Bloomington from 1963 to 1970. My daughter Natalie was born in Bloomington Hospital on July 27, 1967. Pam and I were married in August of 1966 which explains why I spent just one year in Briscoe. Law school consumed the last three years. Then I went to work in Indianapolis and stayed there until 1995 (except for about three months in Albania in 1993). Jeanmarie and I spent 1995 living and working in Warsaw, Poland and then returned to Falls Church, VA in early 1996. I suppose I should also mention that after finishing law school in 1970, I started on my MBA from IU a few years later and finally finished the program in 1979. For the last several years now, I'm either unemployed, self employed, or a consultant depending on my mood and the day I'm asked the question. I guess I'm still trying to figure out what I want to do when I grow up. I'm planning a trip back to Indianapolis this month for some work and to see a few friends while Jeanmarie (also a lawyer) goes off to Uganda for a month. I received a BS in Physics June, 1970 and have worked for the Navy @ Crane, IN ever since. While working there I earned (?) a Master's Degree in Public Administration from IU/SPEA in 1992. I'm also one of the oddballs that married my high school sweetheart while still a teenager (6/68) and am still married to her! I moved out of the AHAYWEH group after two years in Briscoe Quad into one of the beloved green trailers behind Briscoe for my junior and senior years.

In June of 1968 I hoodwinked my high school sweetheart, Gayle, into marrying me. Although I often give her reason to dump me, she hasn't yet. I got an economics and government degree from IU in 1969. I started teaching school the next year while working on my MS and waiting to get drafted, which never happened. Now we live in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Our daughter, Lisa, was born in 1970. She and her husband Matt live in Michigan. I became executive director of the Northeast Indiana Education Service Center in 1998. Michael Allen THOMSON
I spent four years at IU as an Ahayweh between 1964-1968. After starting out rooming with Frank Gentry in Trees Center/Upper Linden, I was emigrated to Foster for the last semester of my freshman year. I then spent my last 3 years in Briscoe rooming alone or with Mike Retherford. In 1968, I left the fold with a BA in public administration (courtesy of ROTC) and spent the next 28 years bouncing around the world with the US Air Force. Along the way, I earned an MS in forensic science from George Washington University, an MBA equivalent from the National Defense University and a fellowship in forensic medicine from the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. Following an intense final 3 years heading security for military operations in garden spots like Bosnia, Somalia, Rwanda and Haiti, I retired in 1995 as a colonel and was forced to find a routine job. When a corporate merger and the choice of moving again ended my first civilian career as a consultant, I made a real life style move in 1997 and became the Administrator (director) of the Washington, DC office of one of the largest law firms in the country. I describe my job as being akin to herding 180 cats. Since so many Ahaywehs seem to have become lawyers, I am surprised more did not make it to DC (one of every seven workers here is a lawyer).
